Shrub & Bush Pruning for Health, Shape & Long-Term Growth

In addition to small and large tree care, Morvin Tree Pruning provides comprehensive cutting services to accomplish multiple goals for smaller vegetation such as bushes and shrubs. When done in concert with tree service projects, Morvin Tree Pruning can give substantial efficiency discounts. Our crews do not consist of just one qualified cutter but instead an array of arborists capable of more than just clean up. While aerial cutters start setting up for advanced work, other crew members can use their time effectively to maintain these plants. This efficiency makes pricing much more flexible and can put all your vegetation on a similar schedule.

It is important to note that trimming verse pruning considerations need to be applied when coming up with an effective strategy for long term bush and shrub care. Gas and electric powered shears are an extremely effective tool when “trimming” these plants. A 5 foot by 5 foot bush can require over 250 smaller pieces to be shaved off when trimming to accomplish a particular aesthetic or containment goal. This multitude of wounds requires the plant to rapidly produce more foliage to recover at the cutting sites. Year after year, this procedure can produce vegetation that is extremely thick at only the top 5% layer due to lack of interior sunlight. The growth of the plant then exceeds its space compatibility and is unable to be cut back to a predetermined spec because no foliage is present.

To combat this predicament, Morvin Tree Pruning suggest “pruning” of the bushes and shrubs. Preferably starting at a younger age, select cuts can be made farther down into larger diameter wood. This thins thick portions of the plant and allows sunlight to now penetrate the inner canopy. These “skylights” initiate growth on inner canopy sections which can later be cut back if a more aggressive cut is necessary to match site limitations. In addition to more selection of later cuts, air is more easily penetrated through the plant. This helps prevent microclimates internally, preventing humid conditions for pests and diseases to flourish.

This two part strategy is most effective when started post planting after the bush or shrub has established. There are limitations to its effectiveness when begun after multiple cycles of shearing. Although still beneficial, more mature and or stressed bushes and shrubs will not respond as rapidly if at all.
